Causality Between the Measured and Underground Economies in New Zealand

چکیده

We investigate some characteristics of the underground economy in New Zealand by testing for Granger causality between measured and "hidden" real GDP in that country. We find clear evidence of causality from measured to hidden economic activity, but only weak evidence of causality in the reverse direction. This poses a dilemma for policy-makers who wish to stimulate economic growth and also minimize the size of the "tax-gap". Author Contact: Professor David E. A. Testing for Asymmetry in the Measured and Underground Business Cycles in New Zealand *

In this paper we consider the cyclical component of the underground economy in New Zealand, and compare some its characteristics with those of the corresponding cycle in real measured GDP. Comparisons are made between the turning points of the two cycles, and formal tests for cyclical asymmetry (in terms of both "steepness" and "deepness") are conducted. The turning-point comparisons reinforce ...

The Short and Long Run Causality between Agglomeration and Productivity

This study is to investigate the short- and long-run causal relationship between agglomeration (localization and urbanization) economies and labor productivity in the manufacturing sector of 28 Iranian provinces over an 11-year period, 2001–2011. Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) method was used to estimate our long-run panel data model. The empirical findings suggested that localiz...

Max Gillman and Dario Cziráky Inflation and Endogenous Growth in Underground Economies The wiiw Balkan Observatory

The paper examines the effect of inflation on the growth rate in economies with underground, or ”non-market”, sectors. The model incorporates a non-market good into an endogenous growth cash-inadvance economy with human capital. Taxes on labor and capital induce substitution into the non-market sector which avoids such taxes. However the non-market sector uses only cash for exchange and cannot ...
